Forget Perfect In Dog Training! Better Starts With A Plan
Anytime the word fix or overcome comes up in a conversation about your dog's behavior, you've got to know that that is a vision of perfection. Perfection doesn't exist for any of us. Heck, I'm not a perfect dog owner. I'm not a perfect dog trainer. I don't have perfect dogs. It's not about perfecting. It's about making it better today than it was yesterday.
Better starts with a plan. A plan that is fluid that you can adjust every single day. Now for some of you, you're going to go, “Well, I don't know how to make a plan.” We've got a playlist over on UA-cam that will give you all you need to know about how I plan each individual training session, or how do I make a strategic plan to overcome a challenge.
Okay, your strategic plan. It begins with a brain dump. A brain dump where you're going to sit down with a pen and paper, and you're going to think of all of the things related to your dog that is frustrating you, worrying you, has you overwhelmed. What are those things?
I want you to rate each thing that you wrote down. Now you might have to come circle back the next day and look at it or something your dog does in the midst of the day go, “I don't have that on my list.” You're going to write everything you can. It is a brain dump.
Number two, is you're going to rate each one of those things on a scale of one to ten. One meaning, ‘Yeah, it's annoying, but I'm not going to check into therapy because of it.’ Number ten is going to be, ‘This has to stop.’
Number three, you're going to look at your list and you're going to pick what I call your domino behavior. It will be one of your highest rated problems or frustrations. And it will be a domino that if I can overcome this, a lot of those other things on the list are going to be insignificant or unimportant to me.
Circle that big domino, and that is the frustration we're going to deal with first. You can do the same process with all of your frustrations, but we're going to start with your domino.
Number four, you're going to describe with specificity the exact frustration we're talking about. And this involves asking a lot of great questions of that problem. Here's the challenge. People generally ask the wrong question. They ask the why. “Why did you do that?” “Why does my dog behave this way?” And the truth is none of us will know that answer unless you are a dog.
None of us will know the why. And people will tell you with great confidence, the reason why your dog did that. But the truth is they don't know. And so, you might go off on a tangent based on their decision of the why. And what if they're a hundred percent wrong? You've gone down a path that may lead you into a worse predicament than you're in right now.
So, the why is not important. We're going to describe the frustration with questions that give us specific answer. How often does it happen? What time of day? You're going to have to start journaling about your challenge. “Oh yeah, it happened at this time.” “It happened at this time.” Were there other dogs around?
Describe everything you can about the environment when it happened, the time of day, how far away from eating was the dog. What was the weather like? What was your state of mind? Were you feeling a little bit frustrated with what went on in your life that day? Write down as many descriptors as you can for each event, and then highlight things that are similar. That's going to help give you clues to what you do to make things better.
Number five. So, your plan is going to focus around the four E's. Enrichment, engagement, education, and exercise. Now for me, I think game playing comes into all of that. So, your plan really should be focusing on games that you would love to play, and your dog loves to play that take you to a better place.
So, start a daily plan. And I promise you, it may not be perfect, but as long as you're taking intentional daily action, I know you'll be able to make it better.

Teach Your Dog The Paws Up Trick For A Picture Perfect Pose
Переглядів 12 тис.12 годин тому
Let's say that we would like our dog to pose to get a picture taken. Recently in our community, Wag Nation, I did a little demonstration of how you can teach your dog the trick “selfie” where the dog will pose on your shoulders. Now let's say you're out walking, you wanted your dog to pose on a log or to pose in front of you know, a building, or to maybe pose in some cute way with their paws up...
Protect YOUR Confidence! Training Tip For Extreme Dogs And Overcoming Frustration
Переглядів 2,8 тис.День тому
“Our dogs are doing the best they can with the education we've given them in the environment we've put them in.” I'm sure it can be a frustration if you have a dog that is either very high drive, or the opposite end, a little bit more timid or shy. When you have any kind of an extreme dog, your mindset is everything. Because there'll be days that it'll be frustrating for you. There'll be moment...

I’m excited to try this with my dog! 🙏😍
Very helpful advice, I will try this.
I love your advice but how do I stop my puppy from stopping from all of the sudden of hitting and barking at me and my family for no reason
My 6 month old Lab responds so great to WIT WIT WIT. As soon as I said it, she came running to me.
How do we keep the dog from climbing to get to the remote feeder?
Hi Susan, I would LOVE to be able to create a calmer reentry into my house when I get home from work. I'm doing recallers now but it's a very overwhelming greeting every day and I'm not sure how to avoid reinforcing bad manners in an overly excited (and probably slightly anxious) 6 month old puppy. He's a groodle, so he's getting pretty big and I PARTICULARLY want to avoid him jumping on people. Any tips as to how I can apply this concept specifically to me getting home?
I can't wait to work on this with Chance. If we asked him today he would say water is something i tolerate as long as i have a peanut butter lick mat stuck to the tub.
We reside in northern Oregon. We have a seven month old female Australian Cattle Dog/ Miniature Pinscher mix and an eight month old Papillon male.
This was very helpful, thanks!
Thank you, Michelle! Happy training 🐾
Lol, used to say to my 2 Boxers, you talkin' to me? You, me? Nothing like a Boxer, or TT, the bulldog cross, right?
😂
Love your end segments! Getting us to subscribe. And the little tail wag when you clicked the clicker… so cute 🥰
My guess : Prophet & Minty
He is such a doll ❤
😆
Why did you name him Potato Salad?
Hi Erline, Kim (who works at Susan's and is Taters co-owner) named him because she loves potatoes ❤️
New Start!

This is so cute. He's determined not to be forgotten.
My dog would swallow the plastic bag. Then a huge vet bill. Lol. For real
New start! I have a 13 wk old Blue Heeler that has been with us for 2wks. He is attached to me but also fearful of people/animals/cars. I think he is getting overstimulated, exhausted every day. I work from home and have taken time off for the adjustment and foundation. I have lots of patients and enjoy him but I don't think I'm giving him what he actually needs. Always trying to learn more about him and his breed bc he is and will be my buddy for the rest of his long life.
You're on a great path, Alecia! Keep learning and you and your dog will do great 💕 Here’s your link to grab your Stickers Template, Training Video and Lesson Plan dogsthat.com/y/276/new-start-bundle
French Fried Potato Salads 😂😂😂😅❤
Tater salad is so adorable!
Kim and I head out tomorrow afternoon to take 3 of my dogs on a road trip down south. Any guesses who the other two dogs are that are joining us? And just so no one worries nobody is sick.
Prophet and Momentum?
Relieved to hear no one is sick. 😊 I'm guessing Prophet and Thisy!
I think you mentioned Prophet and Belief in the 3-4-5! But idk who else?! Mr Swagger?
I got you on all points but I opine that a dog should be able to calm down in certain situations....eg bedtime.
Unrelated to training; how are border collies for long hikes/runs/so on? I know a few border collies, but none of their owners are into long distance.
I’m confused again and I’m really good at math. 🤔
I’m kind of confused. I’m getting a rescue who is reactive to white female dogs. I’m thinking this might help but I’m gonna have to listen to this a few times I think. 🤔
When do the treats stop? At some point you would need to take more than a few steps and stop for a treat. And is break the release word?
I did find the treats all over the house, then find the tin can in order to find your treats, then find the tin can to find your towel toy(puzzle) and work at that to get your treat and thats where we are at now haha
Talk talk talk just get on with it
Oh my gosh FINALLY ive found a video to help!!! So many videos are either averse methods, dominance theory, or food based rewards rather than talking through higher level structures and concepts. (Food based rewards are fine for many households, but I work with village dogs, most of whom were street dogs for the developmental years of their lives...they will ALWAYS be a bit feral about food, so require a careful approach) Im adding a planned third and an unplanned fourth to the pack this summer (the fourth is a family emergency rehoming case for increasing bite severity). Im just beginning my journey into being a dog professional, so its all exciting but overwhelming. LOVE finding solid advice from people who have way more experience! Thank you for this video!!!
Hi, thank you, we really appreciate having you in this community! And congrats on the new additions 💕. We have a full playlist with resources for multi dog house holds, leaving the link here for you: ua-cam.com/video/XO41pfU_Us8/v-deo.html&pp=gAQBiAQB
I love the idea that the game within the game helps the transfer of value happen, but I’m having trouble understanding how to build other games within the games. I’d love more videos on this topic!
I have a high drive dog that easely gets vocal in training. It have been a lot better. But the second we enter the obediant competition the dog gets bananas 😢
My 2.5 yr old GSD just bit my dad 2 days ago out of nowhere because a high value treat was nearby when he reached to pet him, and I’m just so lost and scared and idk what to do. This video gave me a little bit of comfort but I still feel like idk what to do. I watch one video on UA-cam that says to do one thing, then the next says to never do that thing and to do something else. I’ve had many dogs but never had this issue so I just feel lost and so scared he’s going to do it again and I’m going to lose my best friend. I’m trying to gather information to make the right decisions on how to fix it right now and hoping I do the right things and it gets better. Do you think getting him neutered would be a good step to take for helping him be less aggressive and maybe easier to train this resource guarding issue out of him? I just realized this video is years old so idk if anyone will read this but thank you for what you do and I’m going to try to learn more from you in more videos now, I just wish I knew where to start so to not feel so overwhelmed with information
Hi Jesse! We do read comments in older videos, and are so sorry this has happened, so we're sending you love 💕 Here's another podcast on preventing dog bites, it's mostly for children, but there's a lot you can learn from it for your current challenge as well: ua-cam.com/video/ip71Bdkc0gQ/v-deo.html And here's the full Resource Guarding playlist with the video you've already watched and many others: ua-cam.com/video/11bkaaX7LXY/v-deo.html
@@DogsThat Thank you so much you’re very kind to be so helpful. I’m definitely using you as one of my top resources for tackling this challenge and I’m so appreciative for the help and encouragement.
New start.
Hi Sylvia! If you are ready for a new start in dog training, we’ve got you covered! Grab your Stickers Template, Training Video and Lesson Plan - dogsthat.com/y/276/new-start-bundle
Thanks! This helped soothe my dog today, I've learnt a lot from this and the episode on emotional communication in dogs. My dog is a rescue Kelpie and came with engrained barking, perimeter patrolling and extreme aroused behaviors whilst outside. It took some time and regular engagement, de-regulating, training and different techniques to minimize. What I am now noticing is that she doesn't know how to ''chill'' without being exhausted, left alone or sleeping. I was struggling with transitions- coming home or bringing her home to then depart or going from dinner to evening down time. What I am finding is she is really seeking co-regulation and while my manner and emotions is massive. Supporting her as you have addressed in the video has her now sleeping next to me. I didn't use treats at first, but when I left the room and came back, I gave her some treats for staying and going into further relaxation. Thank you!!!
Well done, keep you the good work! 💕
I need help please! I have a 14 month Caucasian shepherd and she is resource guarding me! I gave her a bone and when I tried to say leave it (my training her to leave things, animals or people) she had her fangs out . She has never done this before
Hi Anna, we have a full playlist with resources for you: ua-cam.com/video/11bkaaX7LXY/v-deo.html And here's a short video on why Susan doesn't teach "leave it" and what she does instead: ua-cam.com/video/smTaU66r0q4/v-deo.html
Just getting started on all this. Joined Recallers. My boy learned Down in minutes... literally minutes (in the literal sense of literally). And it has stuck, two days later and he's still doing it with all the apparent joy that Susan's dogs display. Where do I find the instructions for teaching "Stand"?
Yay for joining Recallers and that awesome success! Here's a blog post where Susan explains how to teach the stand cue: susangarrettdogagility.com/2020/10/train-your-dog-to-stand-on-cue/
How do I sign up to be notified?

I've listen to many videos on potty training but this one had the best method. It worked beautifully with my 8 weeks old new puppy. Thank you
We're so glad it helped! Here's a newer video with more help you may need in the near future: ua-cam.com/video/pf6_E1TRYxU/v-deo.html
Well Done! When I read the title, I thought it was a first aid program for dogs 😅
What to do when I'm the one doing the training and when I'm not around, apparently mu teenage dog is an angel. When I'm there, he is rowdy and looking for trouble?
The transfer of value was so fluid and easy to follow the way it blended into her repeating the behavior ❤
❤️❤️❤️
Hi Dogs that team. I was wondering why you videos are not uploaded as podcast anymore since last month? I was enjoying listening to them in my car, but now there no new poadcast and I see that you did about 10 new videos on UA-cam since then. Thanks for the answer in advance.
Hi Lauren! We'll be back with new podcast episodes soon, but in the meantime, these new shorter videos are extracts with key concepts we wanted to share with everyone on UA-cam ❤️
ITS SO FAR BEYOND FRUSTRATING AND SHE ISNT MY 1ST DOG BY ANY STRETCH.
I FULLY DISAGREE. THE LOVE FOR OUR ULTRA SHY AND FEARFUL DOG IS ALWAYS AT 100, BUT SHES STILL A FEARFUL MESS. MAYBE SHES AN EXTREME CASE. IDK, BUT SHES GONNA BE A POUND DOG SOON CAUSE THIS ISNT IMPROVING. ALL FACTS.
I made a detailed plan after I journaled EVERYTHING after adopting my rescue, Rowdy. When I rated everything, there was a 10, some 9's and some lower rated frustrations. After identifying the dominos, working the fluent plan, we made progress. It works!!!!
Yes, Lisa! Excellent work! ❤️🍪
oof - "Their criticism of what I'm doing doesn't define myself, my dog, or my relationship with my dog" ... that... cuts through some emotions I don't think I knew how to untangle. Thank you.
❤️❤️❤️
Only one thing on my list for now : reactivity (to dogs). Without his reactivity, my wonderful dog would be perfect... almost 😉
Hi Louise, we have a playlist full or resources for reactive dogs, here's the link for you: ua-cam.com/video/qsHK--RoRjs/v-deo.html&pp=gAQBiAQB
